Wilderness First Aid

Accidents happen. People get hurt, sick, or lost. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and it starts to rain. Would you know what to do? Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, you can make the difference between a good outcome and a bad one-and maybe even save a life.

Wilderness Navigation (Map and Compass)

Getting lost in the woods of Maine and New Hampshire can become a major problem in a hurry.  Every year, sportsmen enter the field and lose their way causing themselves, their families, friends, and law enforcement a substantial amount of stress and expense.  This one day class is designed to give you the confidence that only comes from knowing where you are, and how to get to and from a specific location with ease.

Careful reading of topographical maps has long been a secret of legendary hunting and fishing guides in Northern New England.  Knowing where trophy animals and fish hide, and locating those areas on a map can increase your potential for success.

Along with classroom teaching and planning, we will use our map and compass to trek across several hundred acres and back to the parking area.  Come learn a new skill and gain the knowledge you need to stay safe!

Month Long Wilderness Canoe Expedition

***College Credit***GI Bill approved***

The course begins with a week at the field school where we learn the basics of expedition canoeing and living on the river. We will be working on skills both on and off the water, and by weeks end will have spent time on the best local water.
Phase 2 will find us at the headwaters of the St. John river in northwestern Maine, where we will cover the 105 miles from Baker Lake to Allagash.
For phase 3 we will travel the length of the Aroostook river, from the headwater lakes back to the field school. Our backup trip for this year, if something doesn’t work out with our first choices due to weather, water levels, etc., is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway.

Maine Guide Medic Course

***College Credit***GI Bill approved***

Modern Wilderness First Responder (WFR) courses spend less than a day teaching the critical wilderness skills required to safely spend an unplanned night in the wilderness with an injured/ ill patient and minimal equipment.

It’s easy to say build a shelter, make a fire, and process water. We feel that teaching in this manner gives students a false sense of security and makes assumptions that they know and can apply these critical skills in all types of conditions when an emergency actually occurs. This is what sets our program apart from other WFR’s. We incorporate the “Wilderness” skills as well as the “Medical” skills. This is why our program is 2 weeks in length. Students will receive daily Wilderness and Medical instruction followed by hands-on training and mock scenarios. Our scenarios will include different recreational activities that typically take place in Maine like hiking, snowshoeing, canoeing, and kayaking. Two-over-night exercises will also take place. At the end of week one, students will spend a night in the woods solo with minimal gear. Spending a night alone in the wilderness is a very powerful experience and should be experienced in a control setting. We will provide you with this experience.  This is a great opportunity for aspiring or current Maine Guides. The final exercise will involve a group/ team over-night scenario that includes caring for a patient.
